Miscellaneous posts that may or may not have anything to do with Carolina real estate, but hopefully they’re entertaining and enlightening nonetheless.

47 year old Susan Boyle of “a cluster of villages” in the UK shows the world that

  1. You can never judge a book by its cover, and
  2. You should never, ever give up on your dreams.

This performance is absolutely amazing and I hope it warms your heart as much as it did mine!

According to a recent study commissioned by Combos snack foods and conducted by Sperling’s BestPlaces, Charlotte NC ranks as one of America’s Top 5 ‘Manliest’ cities.  In fact, it ranks 2nd just behind Nashville, TN.

Some of the criteria that helped Charlotte rank so well include the number of professional major league sports teams, popularity of tools and hardware, and frequency of monster truck rallies.  I guess it pays to live in NASCAR country, huh?

Anyway, I don’t know if this high ranking is such a good thing or not, but I guess anything that brings some noteriety and attention to this region is a good thing.  Even if it implies a we might be just a little more ‘country’ than some other places around the country!

What do you think?  Is this ranking a good thing or a bad thing for the Rock Hill SC and Fort Mill SC area?  Go ahead and leave your comments below.

It seems like we’re usually good for one snow day a year, but we’ve actually been hit with a couple of them this year.  Yesterday evening, after a day full of driving rain, the rain turned to snow and thus began a gentle snowfall that lasted well into the night.

Local schools called classes off for the day and many businesses opened late.  While it wasn’t the biggest snow storm we’ve ever experienced here in Rock Hill SC, it was enough to cause some problems such as power outtages, traffic accidents, and parents wondering what to do with their kids for the day.

Here’s  a quick list of tips for dealing with the occasional snow and/or ice we get here in the Rock Hill SC area.

Winter Driving:

  • Slow down
  • Don’t tailgate
  • Allow more distance than you think you’d need when stopping
  • Pay close attention to areas in the shade because this is where ice is likely to form
  • Stop slowly – if you have ABS brakes, simply hold the pedal down firmly.  If you DON’T have ABS brakes, pump the brake slowly

Keeping Warm in the Cold:

  • Dress in several layers and wear a waterproof/windproof outer shell
  • Wear a hat to conserve body heat and keep your feet and hands dry
  • Avoid over-exhursion

Coping  Without Power:

  • Stay away from downed power lines or anything touching a downed power line
  • Don’t stand under ice-laden power lines
  • Don’t open freezers or refrigerators more frequently than necessary
  • Never bring a charcoal grill or stove indoors for heat or cooking as the CO gas can be deadly

Yes, it’s true.  The Charlotte area IKEA store finally opened today!

The new Swedish-based store is located in the Northeast side of Charlotte near UNC Charlotte and Harris Blvd.  There’s been a lot of news coverage about it and today was no exception.  Especially since there were lots of crazy people that camped out overnight (some for several days) for an opportunity to be one of the first 100 people in the door because they were given a free Poang chair.

That's me on the left.

That's me on the left.

Well, when I say “crazy people” I it with complete affection because….well, I was one of those crazies!

Yep, that’s right.  I camped out last night, in the cold and rain I might add, for a chance to be one of the first 100 people through the door.  I arrived at 10pm last night and was informed shortly after arriving that I was number 101.  Bummer!!

Fortunately though, 2 people left during the night and as I result I moved up to #99 and was lucky enough to get a free chair.  Yeah!

Anyway, even though my husband thinks I’ve gone completely off my rocker it was a ton of fun, I made some amazing new friends, and it’s a memory I’ll remember for a long time to come.  Especially as I’m relaxing in my free chair!

One of my goals with this blog is to provide readers and visitors to the Rock Hill SC or Fort Mill SC areas with insight into this great area we live in.  And one of the most important things that can make an area even better is good restaurants.  Well, at least I think so.

Anyway, I’ve posted several reviews of some great local restaurants my husband and I have found, but I’d like to know what you think.

What are some of your favorite, small, hometown restaurants in either Rock Hill SC or Fort Mill SC?

What do you like about them?  What’s your favorite dish?  Are the prices reasonable?

Leave your comment below and share your thoughts and chances are I’ll pass along your recommendation to my clients, prospects, fellow real estate agents, and readers of my blog.

Thanks in advance for your help!
