Fun Stuff

Miscellaneous posts that may or may not have anything to do with Carolina real estate, but hopefully they’re entertaining and enlightening nonetheless.

After months of hearing about the visit Ty Pennington and his crew from ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover paid to Charlotte in late July of this past year, we finally got to see what all the buzz was about.  In last night’s 1 hour show, Pennington and crew made over the East Charlotte home of Alisha King and her family.

King and her husband Curtis, are the parents of 3 of their own children and at least another dozen or so kids they care for at their day care ‘Step by Step’.  It was a pretty heartwarming story about how this family has opened their home and their hearts to so many low income families in need of a safe place to take their kids and not have to pay huge fees to do so. Yet the King’s home was in desperate need of repair as their was significant amounts of mold under the tiny, aged house.

Well, true to form, after just 7 days, the big bus rolled away to reveal a beautiful new home and attached day care facility where the old one once stood.  The King’s were of course extremely excited with the work that had been done and the house was absolutely gorgeous.

Ahhhh, the impact just one play can have.  Did you watch the Panther’s game yesterday in which they suffered their first loss of the season?  If not, then let me fill you in.

From The Charlotte Observer:

The Panthers held a seven-point lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. They faced third-and-8 at their 29.

They could’ve played it safe and called a running play, hoping to maintain their lead at halftime.

They chose a more aggressive approach, throwing instead of running, but nothing too risky.

It came oh-so-close to working.

Instead, it backfired dramatically.

Minnesota cornerback Antoine Winfield blitzed from Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme’s right side and decked him full-force, causing a fumble. Winfield picked up the loose ball at the 19 and ran it in for a touchdown.

Suddenly, the score was tied and the Vikings were on their way to a 20-10 victory.

Needless to say, the whole momentum of the game changed on that one play and as a result, they Panther’s suffered their first loss of the year.  Fortunately, there’s still a long way to go and the Cats are tied atop their division with Atlanta and Tampa Bay, both at 2-1 as well.

In case you can’t tell, I’m a HUGE Panther’s fan and LOVE kicking back and watching them play on Sunday’s.  Even when the loss comes down to just one, momentum changing play!

I know this video has absolutely NOTHING to do with buying or selling real estate in the Rock Hill SC or For Mill SC area, but it’s just too funny not to post.

And don’t worry, real estate IS  a complicated game so I won’t threaten you with se-curity or anything else Bon Qui Qui-ish.  ;-)

Enjoy!

After a long, painfully slow off-season the Carolina Panthers are finally ready to get back on the playing field as they’ll take on the Indianapolis Colts tomorrow night at Bank of America Stadium.  Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30pm.

If you can’t be at the stadium you’ll be able to watch the game on TV on the Panther’s TV Network.  It will also be on the radio on WBT.

For a breakdown of the game, visit the Panther’s website at www.Panthers.com.

Go Panthers!

The wildly popular TV show, ‘Extreme Home Makeover’ paid a visit to the Charlotte area this past week as Ty Pennington and his crew descended on 4214 Sudbury Road in the Windsor Park neighborhood.  The 1,900 ft2 home was replaced with a 5,100 ft2 abode all within106 hours of hard, sweaty labor.

Temperatures ranged in the mid-90′s and given the humidity here in the Carolinas, we know it was a muggy affair.

The King family pulled up at about 3:17pm yesterday, fresh off a gifted vacation to Puerto Rico, and the crowd began chanting the customary phrase that’s become part of the show, “Move that bus!”  And sure enough, off went the bus revealing the freshly completed gem of a house.

The King’s run a daycare and according to Curtis King, the husband, the size of the business doubled from being able ot have 12 tots under care to 24.

In terms of an estimated value of the property it’s difficult to determine because there really aren’t any comparable properties against which to get a clear picture of the home’s value in it’s location.  Howerver, many Charlotte real estate experts projected that if the home were located in Myers Park or Dilworth, 2 older but upscale areas of Charlotte, the value of the home would be somewhere between $800K to $1MM.

Now, my husband and I do watch the show and one of the biggest questions we’ve always had was ‘how does the family pay for the added taxes, electricity, water, gas, etc.?’ Well, according to the article in the Charlotte Observer:

“Most family mortgages are paid off,” says Didiayer Snyder, one of the designers on the Charlotte build. Also, money is put in escrow for things such as taxes, power bills and other expenses. What’s given to the King family won’t be known until the show airs.

Well, I’m happy for the King family and as always, am glad to see ABC do such a great job of reaching out to the community and helping worthwhile families that need a hand.  It’s too bad there aren’t more big name companies doing more of the same.
