With all the talk about the recent $700B government bailout, increased foreclosures, and concerns about the economy one county in Florida has come up with a plan to clean up a large number of REO properties.
Fortunately, the York County area hasn’t been hit nearly as hard as the entire state of Florida in terms of a real estate market gone bad, so I don’t think this would be necessary here, but it’s certainly a unique twist.
What do you think. Is it a good idea? Would it work in every area of the country?

After a week of courtroom threats and billions of dollars at stake, the Federal Reserve approved the sale of local Wachovia to CA based Wells Fargo Bank. Initially, Wachovia agreed to sell it’s banking operations to Citigroup at a deep discount. But a few days later Wells Fargo came in with a much larger deal for the whole shebang. There was some question as to which one would get the final say-so as Citigroup threatened legal action, but at the end of the day, after Federal regulators approved the Wells Fargo deal, the Citigroup folks decided not to challenge the sale.
So, again we’re stuck asking the question “what does this mean for Charlotte and the York County region?”
While I initially thought the Citigroup deal would have only a minor impact, I think the Wells Fargo deal does much more damage to the region. While Citigroup was only taking over banking operations, Wells Fargo is getting the whole package. As such, it probably means more jobs will be moved out to CA as that’s where Wells Fargo is head quartered.
It’s reported that some 20,000 Wachovia employees live here in the Charlotte area, and I’m guessing we’ll see a reduction of that number. How many? Only time will tell.
At the same time, the sky isn’t falling. I promise!
If anything, it just means more opportunities for other businesses to step up and fill the gap left by Wachovia. Home values will most likely take a bit of a hit, but it won’t happen for several months and until the full impact of the deal is better understood.
What do you think? How do you think this deal will impact our region? Go ahead and leave your comments below.

I know this has absolutely NOTHING to do with buying or selling your dream home in the Rock Hill or Fort Mill area, but my husband’s a HUGE South Caroline Gamecock fan and I couldn’t help posting this.
One of Rock Hill’s brightest young stars, Stephon Gilmore, QB and DB for No. 2 ranked South Pointe High School announced today that he’s selected the University of South Carolina over other football powerhouses like Clemson, Alabama, Southern Cal, and Tennessee. He primarily plays QB in High School, but will move over the other side of the football next fall and play DB.
Stephon’s mom, Linda, works with me here at Keller Williams and I can say it’s a fantastic family, very close, and not only will Stephon be an asset on the football field next fall for the Gamecocks, but in the classroom as well.
Congratulations Stephon and we look forward to watching you work your magic in Columbia for the next few years!

There was an article in today’s Rock Hill Herald that, in a tongue in cheek manner, listed some of the potential jobs available here in York County that Tommy Bowden, who resigned as head football coach at Clemson, could potentially land:
- Dog watcher. York County has animal rights activists falling over each other to decide whether dogs should be tethered. What real people call “chained.” Bowden could dog sit.
- Dishwasher at the Varsity Restaurant. Owner Roy Russell soon will have to spend time shooing away smokers when the city decides coffee and cigarettes together is illegal, so Russell might need help in the back.
- Fort Mill mayor. The current mayor forwarded an e-mail that wondered if Barack Obama might be the antichrist. He then wondered why anybody would care, why the media cared when it became an Internet sensation, and why some said he may have been silly or stupid to do so.
- Chaffeur, York County Council. Meetings in York are a long way from Fort Mill if you aren’t supposed to drive.
- Rock Hill police officer. Wait, the city management prefers hiring consultants over cops.
- Avon salesman. A classified ad in The Herald on Tuesday stated “Income Unlimited!” I guess that means millions.
Of course, with a $3.5 million buyout, chances are Coach Bowden won’t be coming to York County any time soon looking for a replacement job!
